Ferris State Falls To Lake Superior State In GLIAC North Play

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad bolted out to a first period lead, but could not sustain the advantage as Lake Superior State came back for a 62-51 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory on Saturday (Jan. 23) in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bulldogs led after one quarter 13-11 before LSSU fought back for a 29-25 halftime lead. Lake Superior State then increased its lead with a big start to the third period when they outscored FSU 17-11 in the frame.

Ferris State turned up the pressure on the press in the final quarter, but could not overcome the margin as the Lakers held on for the league division win.

Sophomore center Rachel McInerney paced FSU with a team-high 18 points and nine rebounds. She was the lone FSU player to reach double-digits as freshman guard Margo Brown scored nine points and senior forward Alexis Huntey tallied eight points in the setback.

LSSU was paced by Mackenzie Edwards, who netted 19 points overall. Courtney Jacobsen added 14 points off the bench with Rachel Novotny scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a double-double performance.

The Bulldogs were limited to 32.3% shooting for the game, including a five-of-20 (25%) showing from three-point range. FSU went four-of-five (80%) at the free throw line.

On the Lake Superior State side, the Lakers shot 43.8% overall and made nine-of-17 (52.9%) three's along with 11-of-15 (73.3%) free throws.

FSU finished with only 14 turnovers compared to 18 for the Lakers, but LSSU also dished out 15 assists and netted six blocks along with five steals. Ferris State had 12 assists, 10 steals, including five from senior guard Katie Mavis, and a single block.

In addition to her five steals, Mavis also had five assists for the Bulldogs while freshman forward Abby Nakfoor added three assists.

The Bulldogs will return to action as they wrap up a three-game road stretch at Hillsdale on Thursday, Jan. 28, starting at 6 p.m. (ET). FSU then returns home to host divisional leader Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Wink Arena starting at 1 p.m. (ET).
