Ferris State Falls In Season Finale On The Road At Rival GVSU

Allendale, Mich. - Despite a strong showing in the opening quarter, the Ferris State University women's basketball squad fell 80-46 to the rivalGrand Valley State Lakers on Thursday (Feb. 25) in the Bulldogs' season finale inside the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale.

The Bulldogs trailed only 14-13 after the opening quarter on the strength of an early eight-point run.

However, Grand Valley State ran back ahead in the second frame, outscoring the Bulldogs 23-6 in the stanza on their way to an eventual Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory.

Sophomore forward Rachel McInerney capped her strong second campaign in a Bulldog uniform with a team-best 18 points and six rebounds. Senior forward Alexis Huntey also had six rebounds in the losing effort.

Junior forward Joslyn Nicholson added seven points in 20 minutes of action off the bench.

The Lakers hurt the Bulldogs was in turnovers and points off of turnovers. The Lakers forced 25 miscues and cashed in for 40 points on those turnovers.

On the opposite side, Ferris State forced just 11 Laker turnovers and capitalized only for four points on those turnovers.

Four Grand Valley State players finished in double figures, with Lindsay Baker coming off the bench to drop 23 points to lead all scorers. Baker also shot 7-of-12 from beyond the arc.

Taylor Parmley had 17 points off the bench as well for GVSU and shot 7-of-9 from the field. Bailey Cairnduff added 14 points while Kayla Dawson totaled 11 for the evening.

Grand Valley State's bench also outscored Ferris State's 42-12 for the night.

On the glass, Cairnduff led all rebounders with seven total caroms. The Lakers won the battle on the glass by a 31-26 margin.

The Lakers shot 41.7 percent from three-point land, nailing 15 three-point shots. The Bulldogs mustered only three on 3-of-11 shooting.

Ferris State did fare well from the free-throw line, hitting 9-of-10 shots. Grand Valley State also hit nine free throws, but it took them 13 chances to do so, as they finished shooting 69.2% from the charity stripe.

The game marked the final contest for FSU's Katie Mavis and Emily Evans in a Bulldog uniform. Evans finished the evening with six points, five rebounds and four assists while Mavis contributed five points and a pair of assists in her final collegiate game for the Bulldogs.
