
Ferris State Women's Golf Still In Contention After Second Round At NCAA East Region Championships
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team remains in contention following day two play on Tuesday (May 6) in the NCAA Division II East Regional Championships at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale.
The Bulldogs carded a second-round 313 team figure and sit eighth overall following 36 holes of play in the 18-team regional event. FSU had shot a 316 team figure in round one play on Monday in the 54-hole competition and is now five shots out of fifth place overall going into the final round.
Host Grand Valley State leads the field at 588 overall followed by Findlay (592), Tiffin (617), Missouri-St. Louis (622) and Indianapolis (624) in the top five. Wayne State is sixth (625) with Saginaw Valley State seventh (628) and FSU eighth (629). The top five teams following the last round will move on to the D2 National Championships.
The Bulldogs' Kamryn Shannon is tied for eighth place overall with a 150 total, carding a 76 in the first round before coming back with a 74 on Tuesday. Both Susie Gietl and Lizzie Anderson are now tied for 38th place with 159 totals. Gietl shot a 80 after her first-round 79 while Anderson came back with a 77 on Tuesday following an 82 in round one.
Meanwhile, Ashley Thomasma carded a 83 in round two and is tied for 57th at 162 overall. She had notched a 79 in the opening round. Teammate Kylie Walker is tied for 69th on the leaderboard at 164 with back-to-back scores of 82 each day.
The final round of play in Allendale is set for Wednesday (May 7).
All participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition with the top five teams from the East Region along with the top two individuals not on an advancing team moving on to the national championships set for May 13-17 at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
This year's berth marks the Bulldogs' fourth-straight berth in the NCAA Regional Championships. Three years ago, the Bulldogs placed 11th at the East Regional Championships in their first team trip to the postseason since 2014 when FSU finished fourth overall in the regional championships. The Bulldogs previously made 13 consecutive NCAA appearances from 2002 to 2014.
Overall, the Bulldogs have twice captured a regional championship in 2003-04 and 2006-07 while attaining runner-up honors four times (2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, 2008-09).
