Ferris State Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision To Winona State

The Ferris State University women's soccer team managed to register a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal over Winona State in Sunday's (Sept. 5) non-conference match, but still came out on the short end as the Warriors claimed a 1-0 victory at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

With the loss, Ferris State drops to 0-2-0 overall for the season while Winona State improved to 1-1-0.

Ferris State registered 16 shots in the match, which included 10 in second half, to tally one extra shot more than Winona State's total.  The Warriors would hold a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Winona State didn't waste much time scoring in the opening half as Jordyn Strege's header bounced off the Ferris State goal crossbar and deflected into the net at 1:22 into the contest giving the Warriors a 1-0 lead. 

In the seventh minute of the first half, the Bulldogs appeared to have tied the contest on a goal by junior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) from about the six-yard line but the apparent marker was disallowed due to an offsides call. 

The Ferris State offense received a balance performance as five individuals produced two shots on goal apiece - senior defender Kristen March (Canton/Plymouth Salem), Bri Borgman, sophomore defender Kasey Ruimveld (Vicksburg), senior midfielder Kara Lovelace (East Kentwood), and sophomore forward Cassie Aro (Gaines/Linden).

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) absorbed the loss in dropping to 0-2-0 overall on the season and stopped five Winona State shots on net in a complete-match effort.  Anna Belpedio picked up the win for Winona State by turning aside all 12 FSU shots on goal.  

The Bulldogs continue their current season-opening three-match homestand this Wednesday (Sept. 8) against 2009 NCAA Division II National Champion and four-time defending conference champ Grand Valley State.  The 2010 league opener versus the West Michigan rival Lakers is set for a 4 p.m. (EDT) start at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids.
