Women's Soccer Defeated 1-0 By Saginaw Valley State

The Ferris State University women's soccer team continued its productivity on the defensive side by giving up just one goal for the fourth time early in the 2010 season, but that was all Saginaw Valley State required in a 1-0 decision over the Bulldogs this Friday (Sept. 10) afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at the SVSU Soccer Complex in University Center, Mich.

The conference match's lone score would occur late in the first half at the 36-minute mark to be precise as Kayla Johnston took a throw in pass from teammate Charley Porter and proceeded to move in on FSU freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) in a one-on-one situtation.

Freshman forward Emily Kraska (Bay City/John Glenn) led Ferris State in shots with two of the team's four total for the match.  Senior defender-midfielder Kristen March (Canton/Plymouth Salem) and junior defender Mekyla Spraggins (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central) accounted for the other two with one apiece. 

Overall, Saginaw Valley State would hold a 14-7 advantage in total shots, including an 8-3 margin in the opening half.  SVSU, which improved its record to 3-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the GLIAC, also posted a 3-1 edge in corner kicks over the Bulldogs.

Rachel McCollum (0-4-0) made four saves in a complete-match performance for Ferris State, which is now 0-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in GLIAC match play to date this fall. 

The Bulldogs will seek to give first-year head coach Matt Kellogg his first victory at FSU this Sunday (Sept. 12) versus the Northwood Timberwolves.  The conference outing is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (EDT) start at the NU Soccer Complex in Midland, Mich.

NOTES: FSU's seven shots in the match marked a season low, which was previously 12 versus Grand Valley State (9/8) . . . Junior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) is 32 minutes shy of moving into a sixth-place tie with Ashley Lukes (2004-07; 3,273 career minutes) among the Bulldogs' all-time minutes played leaders.
