Three First-Half Goals Lead Ferris State To GLIAC Road Match Win

The Ferris State University women's soccer extended its current unbeaten streak to three straight as the Bulldogs tallied three unanswered first-half goals to register a 3-2 decision over the Michigan Tech Huskies in a Sunday (Sept. 19) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division contest at MTU's Sherman Field in Houghton, Mich.

With the victory, Ferris State improves to 2-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference this season.  Michigan Tech drops to 2-4-0 overall and 0-4-0 in league play to date.

The Bulldogs scored quickly in the first-ever meeting between the two teams as senior midfielder Megan Stec (Novi) kicked the ball from in the air on a one-time shot into the Michigan Tech goal just 2:21 into the match for her first of the year.  Junior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa), who would also scored twice in the encounter, passed the ball to Stec on a cross while senior midfielder Kara Lovelace (East Kentwood) earned an assist as well.

Ferris State stretched its lead to 2-0 a little over four minutes later when Bri Borgman netted her second goal of the season at the 6:30 mark as a result of scoring on a header over MTU goalkeeper Mary Spoehr.  Freshman forward Emily Kraska (Bay City/John Glenn) fed Borgman on a crossing pass at the 18-foot line.

Borgman struck again for the Bulldogs with 32:48 remaining in the first half as she produced her third goal unassisted with a shot from the top of the 18-foot mark.

Michigan Tech would get on the scoreboard on a free kick as Amber Hynnek recorded an unassisted goal at 26:44 of the first half from more than 30 yards out to draw within 3-1.

The lone score in the second 45 minutes occurred with 6:55 left to be played when Michigan Tech's Ann Roman connected on a cross header, but the Huskies were denied getting another shot the remainder of the half.

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) made six saves in 90 minutes of the match while improving her record to 2-4-1 this fall.  MTU's Mary Spoehr (2-4-0) had two saves in suffering the loss. 

Michigan Tech compiled eight shots on goal and Ferris State generated five.  MTU also held a 13-12 edge in shots with both teams accumulating eight apiece in the first half.

Ferris State will now prepare to begin a five-match conference homestand, which gets underway this Friday (Sept. 24) with the Ashland Eagles providing the oppposition.  A 4 p.m. (EDT) start time is set for the contest.
