Late Goal By Ohio Dominican Snaps Women's Soccer Unbeaten Streak

Ohio Dominican's Sage Patterson scored with 2:32 remaining to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the Ferris State University women's soccer team this Friday (Oct. 1) afternoon and snap the Bulldogs' five-match unbeaten streak in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

Ferris State, which entered the match riding its five-match unbeaten string (4-0-1), tallied the first goal of the outing in the first half as senior forward Kara Lovelace (East Kentwood) scored her third goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 20:18 mark.  Lovelace, who extended her goal-scoring string to three in a row to date with the marker, converted on kick which went into the far right-side back corner of the Ohio Dominican goal.

The Bulldogs, who fell to 4-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the GLIAC North Division as a result of the setback, weren't able to hold on their one-goal lead for long as the Ohio Dominican netted the equalizer on a Jennifer Holton score just over four minutes following Ferris State's initial goal.  Holton netted her third on the year with a shot in the center area of the goal box after taking a left-side pass from Sierra Patterson.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard until 2:32 left in the match when Sage Patterson connected on a direct kick from 30-plus yards out which sailed high above FSU freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum's (Grand Blanc) outstretched hands into the top right-side corner of the Bulldogs' net for the winning score.  Patterson's unassisted tally was her second on the year for the Panthers, who upped their record to 6-1-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the GLIAC's South Division.

McCollum (4-5-1) completed the match with five saves in 90 minutes of action while Aimee Simonent (4-1-2) also turned aside five shots in a complete-match effort in claiming the win. 

Ohio Dominican concluded the encounter holding a 17-9 advantage in shots, which included a 12-4 first-half margin.  The Panthers totaled seven shots on goal while the Bulldogs registered six such shots in the matchup.  Ferris State also held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

For FSU, Kara Lovelace and sophomore forward Kelsey Aubil (Wayland/Thornapple-Kellogg) led the way with two shots on net apiece while senior forward Carlee Boyle (Lockport, Ill.) and freshman midfielder Courtney Ratz (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) each posted a shot on goal. 

Ferris State is now idle until Friday, Oct. 8, when the Bulldogs resume their GLIAC homestand entertaining the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in a North Division matchup in Big Rapids.  The opening kick is scheduled for 4 p.m. (EDT) at the FSU Soccer Field.
