Ferris State Soccer Blanks Northwood, 2-0
The Ferris State University women's soccer team posted its sixth shutout of this season and its second in a row as the Bulldogs blanked the Northwood Timberwolves, 2-0, this Sunday (Oct. 10) afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest held at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
Ferris State won its second straight match as the Bulldogs improve to 6-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the GLIAC North Division this fall. FSU has compiled a 6-1-1 to date after starting out the 2010 campaign dropping its initial four outings.
The match between the two conference divisional foes was a physical one as both teams combined for 32 fouls while five yellow cards were issued by the referee.
Sophomore forward Kelsey Aubil (Wayland/Thornapple-Kellogg) snapped a scoreless tie in the 51st minute of the second half with her first goal as a Bulldog. Aubil fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the Northwood net from the middle of the goal box after taking a crossing pass from senior midfielder Kara Lovelace (East Kentwood).
Ferris State produced an insurance marker at just over the 87nd minute mark as the ball deflected off a Northwood player on junior forward Bri Borgman's (Holland/West Ottawa) kick and went to senior midfielder Megan Stec (Novi), who buried the ball into the lower right corner of the Timberwolves' goal to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. The goal represented Stec's second on the year while Borgman notched her team-leading 17th point of this season with the helper.
In goal, freshman Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) came up with another solid performance by stopping all seven Northwood shots on net. McCollum, who improved her season mark to 6-5-1 this fall, compiled a couple of crowd-pleasing diving saves in the match. Her counterpart, Northwood goalkeeper Rebecca Lipinski (1-3-0) took the loss in a five-saves performance.
The Bulldogs concluded the contest leading 15-9 in shots while each team chalked up seven shots on goal. Megan Stec and Kelsey Aubil lead the way for Ferris State with two shots on goal apiece. Northwood would hold a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Ferris State will now visit Lewis this Tuesday (Oct. 12) in a non-league match at Romeoville, Ill., starting at 2:30 p.m. (EDT). Following that contest, the Bulldogs resume GLIAC action with their final regular-season homestand of this season next weekend, Oct. 15 and 17. FSU hosts Michigan Tech (Oct. 15) and Northern Michigan (Oct. 17) in their final regular-season home appearances.
