Women's Soccer Plays Lewis To 1-1 Double Overtime Tie

The Ferris State University women's soccer team was able to keep its current unbeaten streak intact as the Bulldogs played Lewis to a 1-1 double overtime tie this Tuesday (Oct. 12) in a non-league contest at the Lewis Soccer Field in Romeoville, Ill.

Despite being outshot 21-10 in the match, Ferris State was able to extend its current undefeated string to three straight (2-0-1).  With the tie, the Bulldogs have now posted a current 6-5-2 overall record this season and are 6-1-2 in their last nine outings to date.

The contest was scoreless through the first 45 minutes of action and remained that way until the 69:01 mark in the second half as sophomore defender Kasey Ruimveld (Vicksburg) scored her second goal of this season on a header.  Ruimveld put Ferris State up 1-0 when she headed the ball into the Lewis net off a free kick from senior defender-midfielder Kristen March (Canton/Plymouth Salem).

The Bulldogs appeared well on their way to prevailing in the encounter but the Flyers came back with the equalizer late in the second half when Kelsie Brown scored off a long free kick with 5:45 left in regulation.

Neither team could break through in either the first or second overtimes although Lewis would account for all eight shots in the extra session, including five in the first overtime stanza.  In corner kicks, Ferris State registered a 13-6 advantage which was highlighed by a 6-1 lead in the first half.  

Ferris State concluded the match with eight total shots on goal and three individuals led the way with three apiece - senior midfielder Megan Stec (Novi), Kasey Ruimveld, and junior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa).

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc), who was tabbed this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week, played the entire 110 minutes between the posts and recorded eight saves.  Arianna Nie made five stops in going the distance for Lewis, which is 5-7-1 overall this season as a result of the tie.

The double-overtime contest represents the second one for Ferris State this fall as the Bulldogs played Northern Michigan to a scoreless tie earlier this season (Sept. 17) at Marquette, Mich.

The Bulldogs resume GLIAC action this weekend (Oct. 15 and 17) with a pair of home matches at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.   Ferris takes on Michigan Tech this Friday (Oct. 15) at 5 p.m. (EDT) before wrapping up the home portion of its 2010 schedule on Sunday (Oct. 17) as Northern Michigan provides the opposition in a 12 p.m. (EDT) tilt.
