Ferris State Women's Soccer Comes Up Short In Overtime At Tiffin

Despite a valiant defensive effort on the road by the Ferris State University women's soccer team, the Bulldogs was dealt a 2-1 overtime loss by the Tiffin Dragons this Sunday (Oct. 24) afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at TU's Paradiso Athletic Field in Tiffin, Ohio.

The game-winning goal occurred in the fourth minute of the overtime period when Lauren Turkington connected on a shot from 15-yards out with 5:47 remaining in the extra session.

Ferris State, which drops to 7-7-3 overall and 7-5-2 in the GLIAC's North Division with the setback, netted its only score of the match in the opening half.  A pair of Bulldog freshmen connected on the scoring play as forward Emily Kraska (Bay City/John Glenn) passed the ball to defender-midfielder Hillary Braun (Rochester Hills/Rochester), who tallied her first collegiate goal with a kick from 18 yards out to give Ferris State a 1-0 lead at the 34:10 mark.

Tiffin quickly countered with its first score to even the contest up at 1-1 as Lauren Merriman knocked the ball into the Ferris State goal off a corner kick.  Merriman recorded the equalizer approximately 1:47 minutes later following the contest's initial tally.

Freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) turned in a solid performance between the posts with 11 saves in 100 minutes of action as her season record falls to 7-7-3.  For Tiffin, goalkeeper Denise Resende (8-3-2) ended the match with five saves in a complete-match effort.

Both teams were active on the offensive end as Tiffin produced 23 shots, including 16 in the first half, while Ferris State registered 10 shots for the match.  The Bulldogs accounted for eight in the second 45 minutes of regulation.  Emily Kraska and Hillary Braun paced Ferris State with two shots on goal apiece.

Ferris State will close out its 2010 regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30, versus the nationally third-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers at the GVSU Soccer Field in Allendale, Mich.  The regular-season finale tilt will commence at 12 p.m. (EDT).
