Women’s Soccer Beats SVSU In League Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State Women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals in the second half in a 3-1 victory over the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals this Friday (Sept. 9) afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

With the triumph, the Bulldogs' season record improves to 1-2-0 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC's North Division. The Cardinals' overall record is now 2-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

Senior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) stole the show as she registered the first two Bulldog goals of the match along with an assist on the third. Borgman's first goal came off a penalty kick at the 15:36 mark of the first half.

The Cardinals came back strong with a goal from Kali Barry from a free kick off of Kellsey Poston.

However, at the 52:30 mark of the match, Borgman tallied her second goal of the game and fourth on the season. The goal came off a pass around a defender deep in Cardinal territory from freshman forward Sam Kay (Portage/Northern)

Freshman midfielder Stephanie Garland (Macomb/L'Anse Cruse North) scored her first Bulldog career goal with less than 10 seconds to play to account for the final margin. Garland's shot came off a breakaway pass at the goal line from Borgman.

The State goalkeeper, sophomore Rachel McCollum, was kept busy as she made five saves in the 90-minute match. Saginaw Valley State goalkeeper Laura Ivezaj make four stops in front of the net.

The Bulldogs totaled seven shots on goal as opposed to the Cardinals' six.

Ferris State will continue conference home play this Sunday (Sept. 11) at 12 p.m. (EDT) as the Bulldogs host the Northwood Timberwolves in Big Rapids, Mich.
