Bulldog Soccer Drops One-Goal Match At MTU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team had its two-match winning streak come to an end on Friday (Oct. 14) as the Bulldogs suffered a 2-1 loss to Michigan Tech on the road in Houghton, Mich.

The host Huskies bolted out to a 2-0 first half advantage and held on to beat FSU in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at MTU's Sherman Field.

MTU scored 15:20 into the contest on Alyssa Hynnek's third goal of the 2011 campaign off assists from Amber Hynnek and Katie Boardman.

The Huskies added another marker at 41:01 of the opening half on Melanie Hoffman's shot, which resulted in her second goal of the year off an assist from Lindsey Van Rooy and Ann Dahlquist.

Ferris State finally scored at 63:57 of the second half on senior forward Bri Borgman's (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) eighth goal of the season.  Freshman midfielder Taylor DiCicco (Washington Township, Mich./Eisenhower) earned the assist as Borgman blasted past a rushing goalie from 10 yards away.

The Bulldogs could get no closer though as MTU's MaryBeth Spoehr made five saves in earning the victory.  FSU sophomore goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) totaled six saves in falling to 5-5-2 overall this year in net.

The Bulldogs held a slim 11-9 edge in total shots, but had only six on goal compared to eight for the Huskies.  FSU totaled 12 fouls with Michigan Tech called for 10 and the Bulldogs posted a slim three-to-one edge in corner kick tries.

The contest was played under windy, rainy and cold conditions at Sherman Field.

Ferris State dropped to 6-6-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the GLIAC while MTU improved to 5-7-1 overall and 3-7-1 in conference play.

The MTU victory avenged an earlier 3-1 setback to the Bulldogs in Big Rapids back in September (9/18).

The Bulldogs will wrap up their two-match trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula by visiting Northern Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 16, for a 12 p.m. (ET) league tilt in Marquette, Mich.
