Overtime Goal Lifts Ferris State Past Madonna In Non-League Play

Big Rapids, Mich. - An overtime goal from sophomore midfielder Stephanie Garland lifted the Ferris State University women's soccer team to a 3-2 extra decision win over Madonna in non-league play on the road Friday (Sept. 7) afternoon in Livonia, Mich.

Garland notched her first goal of the 2012 campaign on a header off a corner kick at the 97:30 mark of the contest to help the Bulldogs pick up their first win of the season.  Freshman defender Lindsey Scott was credited with the assist as FSU improved to 1-1-1 overall this year.

After a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs struck first at 50:48 when freshman Casey Shauman tallied her second goal of the season on a penalty kick.

However, Madonna responded less than two minutes later when Ashley Parent scored on a rebound header off the cross bar to knot the contest.  The hosts grabbed a 2-1 advantage at 71:20 on an own goal by FSU, which occurred in heavy traffic in the box.

The Bulldogs tied up the game at the 78:50 mark when Nicole Boehnke scored her first of the season in unassisted fashion on a rebound shot.  The 2-2 score held up thru the end of regulation, setting up the extra period.

The Bulldogs owned a 17-11 edge in total shots for the day and had all four shot attempts in the overtime session.  FSU had 10 shots on goal to seven for Madonna.  Ferris State also attemped seven corners to only four for the hosts.

Madonna netted 11 fouls to nine for the Bulldogs in the outing with FSU called for offsides three times and MU whistled twice for the infraction.

Bulldog junior goalkeeper Rachel McCollum played all 97:30 in net and stopped five shots with Madonna's Blaire Schmalenberg going the distance and managing to make seven saves.

Shauman paced Ferris State with a game-high tying five shot attempts and Garland added three, all of which came on goal.

The Bulldogs will next square off against rival Grand Valley State in a non-league contest on Wednesday, Sept. 12, beginning at 7 p.m. (ET) in Allendale.
