Bulldog Soccer Squares Off With GVSU In GLIAC Semifinals

*The Opening Kick: The Ferris State University women's soccer team will square off against archrival Grand Valley State in the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals on Friday (Nov. 2) afternoon at the Laker Soccer Field in Allendale.

*About The Contest: The Bulldogs advanced to the semifinals for the second time in school history by beating Findlay on the road in a 2-1 quarterfinal-round decision on Tuesday (Oct. 30) afternoon in Ohio.  Fifth-seeded Ferris State will face the top-seeded Lakers for the third time this season in the second semifinal at 7 p.m. (ET) on Friday.

*The GLIAC Tourney: The first semifinal will pit number two seed Michigan Tech against third-seeded Saginaw Valley State beginning at 4 p.m. (ET).  The winners of the two respective semifinals will then meet in the tournament championship match on Sunday (Nov. 4) beginning at 1 p.m. (ET) in Allendale.

*Ticket Information: Tickets will be sold at the entrance on gameday and are $7 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and children along with $3 for students with a valid ID card.

*Tuesday Triumph: Freshman Casey Shauman's (Portage) unassisted goal with 12 seconds left in regulation lifted Ferris State to a 2-1 upset victory over Findlay on the road in the 2012 GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday (Oct. 30) afternoon in Ohio. The fifth-seeded Bulldogs fought back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to stun the fourth-seeded Oilers in the league tournament and advance to the semifinals.

*Tuesday Scoring: The Oilers took the initial lead on an own goal by the Bulldogs at 20:55 of the opening half and the score stood until the 63rd minute when Bulldog freshman Ashley Bradstreet (Grandville) was able to beat Findlay goalkeeper Samantha Trimboli for a goal.  The score at 63:58 was assisted by freshman Nichole Boehnke (Grand Blanc). The two teams batted with the score even for the next 26 minutes until the Bulldogs capitalized in the final minute of play.  Casey Shauman scored an unassisted goal on a rebound shot at 89:48 to lift the Bulldogs to the victory.

*To The Semifinals: Tuesday's victory was the second-ever conference tournament win for the Bulldogs who improved to 2-4 all-time in GLIAC Tourney action.  It marks only the second time in school history the Bulldogs have reached the semfinals following a second-round setback at Grand Valley State in 2008.

*2012 Record: Ferris State is currently 9-6-3 overall and 7-4-2 in the GLIAC to date this season.  Prior to Tuesday's quarterfinal win at Findlay, the Bulldogs wrapped up conference regular-season play with identical 2-0 league road wins last weekend at Notre Dame (OH) and Lake Erie on Friday (Oct. 26) and Sunday (Oct. 28), respectively.

*Third-Straight Year: This year's berth represents the Bulldogs' third consecutive conference tournament appearance and it marks the first time in school history the Bulldogs have qualified for the event three years in a row.  It is FSU's fifth all-time tournament appearance as the Bulldogs also made the tournament in 2007 and 2008 before the back-to-back trips in 2010 and 2011.

*GLIAC Tourney History: Ferris State has compiled a current 2-4 all-time record (.333) in GLIAC Tournament matches to date.  The Bulldogs made their initial conference tourney appearance in 2007 (10/30/07) with a 3-2 quarterfinal-round loss at Saginaw Valley State.  FSU then registered a 2-0 home decision over Northern Michigan in the 2008 quarterfinals (11/4/08) before suffering a 3-0 semifinal-round setback at Grand Valley State (11/7/08).

*The Coach: Ferris State - Matt Kellogg (Butler, 2000), third season, 23-24-9 (.491). Kellogg serves as the fourth head coach in the FSU women's soccer program's history. Under the direction of Kellogg, the Bulldogs held a 7-9-3 overall record and a 7-5-3 record in GLIAC match play last year.  Prior to coaching at Ferris State, Kellogg spent the 2009 season as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Morehead (Ky.) State and quickly made an impact in his initial campaign as the Eagles captured the program's first-ever Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular-season championship.

*2012 GLIAC Coaches Poll: Ferris State was chosen to finish sixth in the GLIAC Preseason Women's Soccer Poll, which was released by the league office. The league's 14 head coaches participated in the balloting, but were not allowed to vote for their own team. Grand Valley State outdistanced Ohio Dominican by 23 points and collected 13 first-place votes en route to being the preseason league favorite.

*2011 Season: Ferris State concluded the 2011 season with 7-9-3 overall record and 7-5-3 GLIAC record.  It marked the second consecutive year in which the Bulldogs wrapped up the year with a 7-9-3 overall mark.

*FSU's 14th Season: The 2012 campaign represents Ferris State's 14th season of women's soccer. The Bulldogs own an all time mark of 102-126-22 (.452) to date since the program's inception in 1999. The 2003 (11-5-1) and 2005 (11-7-0) seasons hold the program's record for most victories in a single campaign.

*Victory 100: The Bulldogs recorded the program's 100th all-time win with a 2-0 triumph over Notre Dame last Friday.  Tuesday's GLIAC Tourney match at Findlay marked the Bulldogs' 250th all-time contest.

*Beating Notre Dame: The Bulldogs beat the Notre Dame College Falcons last Friday (Oct. 26) by a 2-0 score in Ohio. Freshman Abby Meirndorf scored the first goal of the evening after just 14:13, which was her second goal of the season. The score stood at 1-0 until 70:30 of the second half when the Bulldogs received an own goal from Notre Dame, giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage. FSU held a commanding 30-2 edge in shots with 19 on goal, five of which came from Meirndorf. Sophomore Taylor DiCicco tallied three shots on goal while three others had two shots each.

*Win Over Lake Erie: The Bulldogs defeated the Lake Erie Storm in Ohio on Sunday (Oct. 28) by a 2-0 score to bring the regular-season to a close, recording a two-game shutout on the weekend. After a scoreless first half, sophomore Riley Wood notched her eighth goal of the year in unassisted fashion at 47:06. Three minutes later, sophomore Stephanie Garland scored the second and final goal of the afternoon with the assists coming from Wood and freshman Hunter Dolan. The Bulldogs owned a decisive 24-3 edge in shots with 12 on goal.

* Facing The Best: The Bulldogs have played two of the nation's top teams this season in three games.  FSU battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie versus then third-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) on Sept. 2 at the Grand Valley State Kickoff Tournament in Allendale.  Then, on Sept. 12, the Bulldogs suffered a 1-0 loss to then third-ranked GVSU in a non-league game on its home field before meeting the Lakers on Oct. 6 in league play.  Both AASU and GVSU reached the national semifinals a year ago with the Lakers finishing as the national runner-up.

The Opponent:

Grand Valley State: The Lakers are presently 16-1-2 overall this season after reaching the NCAA Division II National Championship game a season ago. Grand Valley State was a 6-1 winner at home over eighth-seeded Northwood in Tuesday's quarterfinals.

Earlier this season:  The Bulldogs suffered a 1-0 road loss at GVSU in non-league action on Sept. 12 in Allendale before the Lakers recorded a 3-0 GLIAC victory over FSU in Big Rapids on Oct. 6.
