Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 16th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team took down the Northwood Timberwolves 2-0 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Sunda (April 18) at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
The win sets the Bulldogs up to play for their first outright GLIAC Regular Season Championship against rival Grand Valley State on Friday (April 23) in Big Rapids starting at 4 p.m. (ET) in the regular-season finale.
Sunday's victory came on Senior Day as the Bulldogs honored their 2021 senior class, which will likely close their careers as the winningest senior class in school history.
Ferris State struck early when junior Pia Nagel busted down the middle and shelved a shot for her third goal of the season. The goal, which stands as the game winner, tied Nagel for first in school history in career game-winning goals with former standout Emily Rogers with 11 overall. Junior Mackenzie Dawes picked up her team-leading third assist of the year on the goal only1:47 into the contest.
The Bulldogs pressed and finally broke through again at 73:52 when redshirt freshman Jessie Bandyk scored her first collegiate goal on a shot for the top right corner. Freshman Sydney Stones picked up her first collegiate assist on the play as well.
Ferris State had a 20-7 advantage in shots and 12-2 lead in shots on goal. The Bulldogs attempted four corner tries to Northwood's one.
In goal, junior goalkeeper Taryn Meiste made two stops to move to 6-0-1 on the year. Meiste has run her shutout streak to 404:50 which is the third-longest in school history. She picked up her sixth clean sheet of the season, tied for third most in a single season by a Bulldog (along with former Bulldogs Grace Kraft, Carla Gilbertson and Rachel McCollum). The Bulldogs have allowed only one goal this season in eight games.
Ferris State sits 7-0-1 in the GLIAC, and is the only team currently without a loss on their record in the league standings. The Bulldogs are alone in first place going into the regular season's final game on Friday.
