Bulldog Football Camps A Success This Summer!

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University football program wrapped up a successful camp season by holding a prep 7-on-7 passing tourney and Big Man Camp this past Saturday (July 23).

Fourteen high school teams from across the state of Michigan took part in the all-day event including schools such as Big Rapids, Cadillac, Morley-Stanwood, Fowler, Portland, Mancelona and more.  Action took place at three different fields on campus in Top Taggart Field, the FSU practice fields and the Ferris State Intramural fields.  Teams were guaranteed at least five games each.

"The tournament was very competitive and the numbers were a significant jump over our first go around last summer," said FSU assistant coach Chris Boden, who served as the camp coordinator.  "Every team had some great wins and tough losses in the tourney."

Local prep team Morley-Stanwood, which reached the regional final of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division 7 State Playoffs a year ago, repreated as the Ferris State Passing Tourney Champs with a win over Hamilton in the title game.  Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart and Tawas Area also reached the semifinals.

Along with the passing tourney, the day's events also included the Big Man Camp for linemen, which included a remarked increase with 51 kids this year.

Besides the passing tourney and Big man Camp, Ferris State also hosted two other football camps this summer, including the Elite Combine Camp and a Quarterback/Wide Receiver Camp.  The Elite camp doubled its numbers over a year ago and featured 205 talented prepsters while the QB/WR camp also doubled its enrollment with 44 attendees.

"Overall, I'm very pleased with our camps this summer," Bode said.  "In only our second year of doing these four camps, we doubled or tripled our overall numbers in each of them.  We continue to make it a priority that the kids learn proper techniques and have fun playing the game of football."

Ferris State kicks off its 103rd season of varsity competition this fall by hosting Hillsdale in a  non-conference matchup on Friday, Sept. 2, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Top Taggart Field.
