Ferris State Captures Second Place At Great Lakes Region Invitational #1

Seniors Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) and Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) helped lead the nationally 17th-ranked tying Ferris State University men's golf team to a second-place showing at the 2009 NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Invitational #1 (Sept. 20-21) in South Haven, Mich., by claiming two of the top three individual placings.

Eric Lilleboe placed second as he led Ferris State with a six-under par 138 score (67-71=138, -6), which was three strokes in back of Northern Kentucky's Danny Lewis.  Lewis shot a nine-under 135 (68-67=135) to earn medalist honors.  Lilleboe's teammate, Kurt Valley recorded his best performance of the fall season to date by firing a four-under par 140-stroke total with rounds of 70 apiece (70-70=140, -4).  

The Bulldogs held a two-stroke lead following Sunday's (Sept. 20) opening round with a 286 score but then carded a 290 in Monday's (Sept. 21) final round to eventually end up six shots behind team champion Wayne State (573, -3) with a final two-round even-par 576 score.  Ferris State shot a final-round 290 in Monday's (Sept. 21) action after registering a 286 score in Sunday's (Sept. 20) opening-round play on the par 72, 7,003-yard HawksHead Golf Course.

Grand Valley State took third-place by firing a 578 (+2) on the par 72, 7,003-yard HawksHead Golf Course while Indianapolis (580, +4) claimed fourth-place honors.  Saginaw Valley State and Findlay each turned in 585-stroke totals (+9) to gain a share of fifth place among the 24 participating schools.

Junior Joe Brown (St. Ignace/LaSalle) tied for 39th place with a 149 score (74-75=149, +5).  Junior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) finished one stroke behind Brown at 150 (76-74=150, +6) to earn a 45th-place tie.  Another junior, Kyle Wittenbach (Lowell) carded a seven-over par 151 (75-76=151, +7) in his Ferris State debut and was among six individuals to share 53rd-place honors.

A season ago (Sept. 21-22), Ferris State also placed second at the NCAA-II Great Lakes Region Tournament I in South Haven with a 574-team score (284-290=574) in the 36-hole event.

Ferris State will now prepare for its own Ferris State Matt Pinter Invitational this weekend (Sept. 26-27) at FSU's Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich.  Opening round action this Saturday (Sept. 26) will commence at 2 p.m. (EDT) while final-round play on Sunday (Sept. 27) starting at 8 a.m. (EDT).
