Ferris State Golfers Finish Second At Midwest Region Tournament III
Senior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) shot a one-under par 143 to lead the Ferris State University men's golf team to a second-place performance at the NCAA-II Midwest Region Tournament III (April 11-12) in Noblesville, Ind.
Ferris State carded a 592-team stroke total with rounds of 293 and 299 to finish 16 strokes over par and 12 in back of tourney champion Wayne State (580, +4). Indianapolis captured third place with a 593 score (+17) followed by Grand Valley State (594, +18). Rockhurst (595) and Findlay (595) both tied for fifth place with 19-strokes over par totals on the par 72, 7,369-yard Purgatory Golf Club Course.
Kurt Valley's two-round 143 (73-70=143, -1) score tied him for third place with two Wayne State players. Senior Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central) earned sole possession of sixth place by shooting an even par 144 (71-73=144, even). Senior Craig Burrows (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Olmstead Falls) placed in a three-way tie for 40th place by netting a 152 score (74-78=152, +8).
Senior Pat Steffes (Fond du Lac, Wis./St. Mary's Spring), who made his season debut, produced a 153-stroke total (75-78=153, +9) to gain a four-way share of 43rd place honors. Junior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs with a 57th-place tying 155 score (76-79=155, +11).
The second-place showing marked the second straight for Ferris State, which also captured runner-up honors at the NCAA-II Midwest Region Tournament II-The Jewell last weekend (April 2-3) at Georgetown, Ky.
Ferris State will compete in the Findlay Outback Steakhouse Invitational this weekend (April 16-17) at the Red Hawk Run Golf Course in Findlay, Ohio.
