FSU Men's Golf In Third Place At Day One Of NCAA Championships

The Ferris State University men's golf team is sitting in third place at the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships (May 18-21) after firing a 17-over-par 305 team score in Tuesday's (May 18) opening round at The Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind.

The Bulldogs are presently in third place among the 20 participating teams and trail second-place Florida Southern (305) by two strokes.  Nova Southeastern (Fla.) currently occupies the top placing with an 11-under-par 299-stroke total.  Ferris State is two strokes ahead of fourth-place Chico (Calif.) State (307, +19) and four in front of fifth-place Queen's University of Charlotte (309, +21).

Leading the way for Ferris State is senior Eric Lilleboe (Okemos/Lansing Catholic Central), who's among four players tied for second place with one-over-par 73 scores.  Lilleboe, a two-time (2008-09 and 2009-10) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Athlete of the Year, recorded four birdies and five pars in the 18 holes of play.  Nova Southeastern's Ben Vertz is atop the individual leaderboard after shooting an even-par 72 stroke total.

Junior Joe Brown (St. Ignace/LaSalle) recorded a four-over par 76 opening-round score and is one of 10 individuals presently occupying a share for 20th-place honors.  Senior Kurt Valley (Bay City/Western) is tied for 30th place as a result of producing a five-over 77 score.  Valley tallied three pars in the first round, which included two on the back nine.

Junior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) turned in a seven-over 79 stroke total and holds a share of 47th place.  Senior Craig Burrows (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Olmstead Falls) rounds out the scoring for the Bulldogs with a 75th-place tying 10-over-par 82 score.  The FSU golfer generated three birdies and claimed par on five other holes.

Second-round action at the NCAA Championships gets underway this Wednesday (May 19) at 7:30 a.m. (EDT) on both the first and 10th tees.  Ferris State will be grouped with California State-Stanislaus and St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.).
