Ferris State's Joe Brown Selected A Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar

Joe Brown (St. Ignace/LaSalle), a member of the nationally-ranked Ferris State University men's golf team has been selected as a 2009-10 Division II Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar in a recent announcement made by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Brown was one of 178 student-athletes, including 55 in NCAA Division II, to receive such recognition.  A total of 119 NCAA Division I student-athletes and four in NAIA also were chosen as All-America Scholar honorees.   

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar honors, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically while competing in at least two full years at the collegiate level.  The individual is required to participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke average under 78.0 in Division II, and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2 in Division II.  The recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

Brown produced a 77.34 strokes average (2,243 total strokes) in 29 rounds of competition for the 2009-10 season.  He compiled three top-20 place performances, including two among the top 10.  Brown's highest tournament finish was an eighth-place tie at the Ferris State Matt Pinter Invitational (Sept. 26-27) with a three-round 216-stroke total.  He helped the Bulldogs to a program-best seventh-place tying 1,232 four-round team stroke total at the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships (May 18-21) in Noblesville, Ind., with a 325 score, which tied for 73rd-place honors.  

In his three-year (2007-10) Bulldog career, Brown is presently averaging 76.91 strokes a round (5,691 total strokes) in 74 rounds.  He has posted six top-20 place efforts for his career, which includes three in the top 10.

A marketing/professional golf management major, Brown is a three-time (2008-10) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic Team member and was a recipient of the FSU Dean's Academic Award for the 2009-10 season.  

The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) is the professional association of men's golf coaches.  Established in 1958, this non-profit organization is dedicated to educating, promoting, and recognizing its members who participate in men's golf at all levels.  Through its established events and programs, the GCAA maintains a goal of increasing awareness and the status of men's golf.
