FSU Men's Golf Finish 11th Place At The Jewell

Senior Kyle Wittenbach (Lowell) turned in his best performance of this season with a two-round 144 stroke total as the Ferris State University men's golf team finished 11th of 25 teams at the NCAA-II Midwest Region Tournament II-The Jewell this weekend (April 2-3) at Georgetown, Ky.

The Bulldogs turned in a first-round 304 score in Saturday's (April 2) action before registering a 305-stroke total on Sunday (April 3) in final-round action to tally a 33-strokes over par 609 team score at the par 72, 6,882-yard Cherry Blossom Golf Course.

Missouri-St. Louis generated a 588 (+12) score to win the tournament, which was seven strokes better than second-place Wayne State's 595-stroke total (+19).  Ferris State finished three strokes in back of Bellarmine (606, +30) for 10th-place honors and a stroke ahead of 12th-place Maryville (610, +34).

Wittenbach shot an even-par 144 (69-75=144) to gain a share of second place on the individual leaderboard with Wayne State's Steve Fedewa and Casey Pyne of Lewis.  Medalist honors went to Drury's Thomas Hay, who fired an one-under par 143 score with rounds of 73 and 70, respectively.  Wittenbach, the 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship medalist, bettered his two-round 152 score (74-78=152) at Grand Valley State The Arendsen Invitational (Sept. 25-26) in which he garnered a 17th-place tie.

Senior co-captain Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) posted a 23rd-place tying 150-stroke total (76-74=150, +6) which was among 11 individuals to earn the individual placing.  Junior Ian Straayer (Caledonia/Grandville) accumulated a 153 score (75-78=153, +9) to claim a 46th-place tie.

Freshman Trent Davison (Rockford) was one of 10 players to gain a tie for 96th place as a result of shooting a 162 (84-78=162, +18).  Senior Joe Brown (St. Ignace/LaSalle) rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs by recording a 192 score (98-94=192, +48) to place 125th in the tournament.

The Bulldogs will next compete in the NCAA-II Midwest Region Tournament III this upcoming weekend (April 10-11) at hte Purgatory Golf Course in Noblesville, Ind.
