Three Ferris State University men's golf team members placed among the top 20 in helping guide Bulldogs to a third-place showing at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Region Tournament III (April 10-11) with a two-round 597 team score at Noblesville, Ind.
Ferris State, which recorded 295 and 302 rounds for a 21-strokes over par score, ended one stroke behind Ashland (596, +20) for second while Indianapolis (582, +6) was tops among the 25 teams who participated in the 36-hole event.
Senior Garrett Simons (Grand Ledge) lead Ferris State with a one-under par and season-best 143-stroke total (71-72=143) to tie Rockhurst's Clarke Fy (143, -1) for second-place honors. The two finished two strokes in back of Indianapolis' Jacob Yocum (141, -3) for tournament medalist. Simons' 143 score bettered his two-round 147-stroke total set earlier this season (Oct. 18-19) at the Great Lakes Region Invitational II Tournament.
Senior Kyle Wittenbach (Lowell) carded a 149 (73-76=149, +5) to claim a four-way share of 13th place on the par 72, 7,268-yard Purgatory Golf Course. Junior Ian Straayer (Caledonia/Grandville) turned in a 151 score (78-73=151, +7) and was among eight players to tie for 19th place.
