Ferris State Men's Golf Opens Action In NCAA Super Regional Championships Thursday
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf squad will open action in the 2019 NCAA Division II Super Regional Championships on Thursday (May 9) in Hot Springs, Ark.
For the 16th time in the last 17 years, the Bulldogs received an official NCAA Tournament bid and will compete in the three-day Midwest/Central Super Regional event that runs thru Saturday (May 11) at the Hot Springs Country Club.
The Bulldogs will open play in round one on Thursday with tee times beginning at 12:50 p.m. (CT) on the Arlington Course with round two starting on Friday at 8:20 a.m. (CT) on the par 72 course measuring 6,713 yards.
The Midwest/Central Regional will be hosted by Henderson State University and will consist of 10 teams from the Midwest Region along with 10 from the Central Region. Four individuals from each region will also compete in the 54-hole tournament.
At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two individuals not affiliated with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the 2019 NCAA-II Men's Golf Championships slated for May 20-24 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va. The finals will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference.
For the 2019 championships, the Midwest/Central Super Regional will be allocated six berths into the D2 National Championships.
Along with number four seed Ferris State, those teams from the Midwest Region who will be making the super regional tourney appearance are top-seeded Indianapolis, Grand Valley State, Missouri-St. Louis, FSU, Trevecca Nazarene, Findlay, Wayne State, Hillsdale, Bellarmine and Maryville (Mo.) in respective seeding order.
Host Henderson State is the Central Region's top seed and followed by Arkansas Tech, Southern Arkansas, Lindenwood (Mo.), Washburn (Kan.), Southeastern Oklahoma State, Central Missouri, Southwestern Oklahoma State, Northeastern State (Okla.) and Winona State (Minn.).
Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs captured their 20th Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship as they beat rival Grand Valley State in head-to-head semifinal action before topping Ashland in the finals.
Two years ago, in 2017, the Bulldogs earned runner-up honors in the 2017 NCAA-II Midwest/Central Super Regional in Kearney, Neb., before going on to a national quarterfinal finish under head coach Kyle Wittenbach. It was the Bulldogs' 15th appearance at the national championships in school history.
Last year, current FSU senior golfer Andrew Hammett was an individual qualifer for the NCAA Super Regional Championships, which makes this the 17th-straight year in which the Bulldogs have had representation in the NCAA Tournament. The 17-year streak of NCAA Championship representation in men's golf ranks as one of the longest active stretches in the country.
