Ferris State Men's Golf Earns Runner-Up Honors At GLIAC Championships With Strong Sunday Performance

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team made a big run and battled to the final few holes in earning a runner-up finish at the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships, which wrapped up with medal match play on Sunday (April 16) at the Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who had won both of the previous medal match conference championship events in 2019 and 2021, knocked off rival Grand Valley State 3-2 in semifinal-round action early Sunday before falling to champion Davenport by a 3-2 final in the title contest on Sunday afternoon.

This year's GLIAC Championships continued the format established tin 2019 in which all league members competed in 36 holes of stroke play on Friday and Saturday. The low four of five scores counted towards the respective team score with the top four teams advancing to head-to-head medal play on championship Sunday. The bracket format is similar to the current format utilized at the NCAA Championships.

In the opening match of the day, the Bulldogs topped second-seeded Grand Valley State. The Bulldogs claimed wins in three of the five head-to-head matchups with Andrew Proctor claiming a one-stroke win in addition to Joshua Jeffords earning a two-stroke victory along with Nathan Kraynyk, who closed the triumph with an impressive six-stroke win.

After beating GVSU, the Bulldogs came back with another strong performance versus Davenport in the title match on the par 71 course measuring 6,742 yards. Proctor finished with a one-shot win while FSU's Thomas Hursey was victorious by four strokes, but DU claimed the victory by taking the three other head-to-head tilts, including a pair by only two strokes that came down to the final hole.

This year's GLIAC Championships were held in Augusta, Mich., with action at the Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort.

Prior to Sunday's medal match play event, the Bulldogs had posted a 295 team score in Saturday's second round of the 36-hole stroke play event, finishing with a 16-over par 584 figure for the two days of competition. FSU finished behind only stroke play champion Davenport (-6) and second-place finisher Grand Valley State, which was only a stroke better than FSU at +15 for the event.

As one of the top four teams in stroke play, the Bulldogs advanced to Sunday's semifinal action along with DU, GVSU and fourth-place finisher Northwood (+18).

Ferris State's Hursey carded a 139 total in stroke play action and placed second overall at the GLIAC Championships in the individual race. FSU had two finishers in the top 10 and three in the top 15 during the stroke play portion of the championships.

Overall, this year represents the third-straight time in which FSU has finished either first or second at the GLIAC Men's Golf Championships.
