Ferris State Men's Golf Advances To GLIAC Championship Semifinals

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's golf team advanced to the 2023 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Semifinals for the fourth consecutive time following stroke play action on Friday (April 14) at the league championships in Augusta, Mich.

The Bulldogs carded a 36-hole score of 573 to place tied for third overall during the stroke play portion of the conference event and will now advance to Saturday's league medal match play semifinals.

All nine schools took part in the stroke play portion of the championships with the top four schools moving on to the semifinals, which will be contested with head-to-head action. The championship schedule was adjusted due to the weather forecast later this weekend with both rounds of stroke play taking place over a single day on Friday and the semifinals now set for Saturday.

In Friday's stroke play, Ferris State shot a first-round score of 281 and held the second-round lead early before finishing with a 292 over the final 18 holes of competition on the par 71 course measuring 6,742 yards. Grand Valley State posted the best score in stroke play with a 549 figure followed by Wayne State at 559 along with FSU and Purdue Northwest with 573 totals. The next four schools narrowly missed reaching the semifinals as only eight strokes separated the third thru eighth teams overall.

The Bulldogs were led by Adam Arif Madzri, who placed sixth in the field individually with a 139 total. He shot a first-round 67 followed by a 72 in round two.

Meanwhile, Caleb Bond placed tied for 16th overall at 144, notching scores of even-par 71 in the opening round and a 73 in the second round.

FSU's Daniel Shattuck placed tied for 22nd at 145 for the day, posting rounds of 71 and 74 in the first and second round of action, respectively.

Ferris State's Zach Koerner wound up with a 146 total for a share of 26th place on the leaderboard. He shot a 72 in round one and a 74 in the second round.

Finally, Drayton Cleaver came in tied for 28th in stroke play with a 147 score, garnering a score of 74 in the first round and a 73 in the second round.

The semifinals will take place on Saturday morning with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. (ET). Top-seeded GVSU will face fourth-seeded Purdue Northwest with second-seeded Wayne State taking on the third-seeded Bulldogs. The two winners will advance to the championship match later in the day.

Overall, the Bulldog men's golf squad has captured 21 GLIAC Men's Golf Championships in school history and won back-to-back medal match play league titles in 2019 and 2021 (no tournament was held in 2020) before earning runner-up honors a year ago.
