Dawgs Deliver In Home Opening Win Over #20 Michigan Tech

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team worked a 2-1 non-league victory over nationally #20 ranked Michigan Tech on Friday (Oct. 7) in the 2022-23 home opener in front of a strong crowd.

The Bulldogs got a second consecutive stellar outing from junior goalie Logan Stein, who turned aside 28 of Michigan Tech's 29 shots on the evening to remain unbeaten.

Ferris State jumped in front just 16 seconds into the contest when a big hit at the penalty box doors sprang freshman forward Tyler Schleppe free for a breakaway, where he fired his first collegiate goal past MTU goaltender Blake Pietila. Ferris State junior forwards Stepan Pokorny (2) and Jacob Dirks (1) earned the helpers on the goal for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

The Huskies answered at 5:24 when Parker Saretsky got loose in the slot and stretched past Stein to slide in his first goal of the year, tying the game at 1-1.

In the second paeriod, Ferris State had a to kill off a pair of penalties, and just after the second of the two, they struck for the eventual game winner. Ferris State senior forward Dallas Tulik picked up the puck at the left hash mark and ripped it past Pietila for a 2-1 Bulldog lead at 15:42 of the middle frame for his first goal of the year. Ferris State sophomore forward Nick Nardecchia (1) and freshman forward Connor McGrath (1) picked up the assists on the play. The assist was McGrath's first collegiate point.

Ferris State ground down Michigan Tech and limited the Huskies to eight third period shots on their way to the 2-1 victory.

Both teams went scoreless on the man advantage, as Ferris State finished 0-2 with four shots, with Michigan Tech going 0-4 on five shots on goal. Pietila took the loss for the Huskies by making 23 stops, while Stein picked up his first win of the year, stopping over 96 percent of the shots he faced.

The Bulldogs get a second-straight shot at a 2022 NCAA Tournament team when they face off with nationally 18th-ranked Western Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 8) inside Ewigleben Ice Arena.
