Bulldog Softball Falls In Two Games At Saginaw Valley State On Sunday

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad returned to the field on Sunday, but fell in a pair of tightly-contested road matchups at Saginaw Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Bulldogs dropped the opener 4-0 and fell in the nightcap by a 7-4 final in University Center.

In the opener, Saginaw Valley State scored the first run of the game in the first and added two more in the third and one in the fourth in garnering the win. The Cardinals totaled nine hits to four for the Bulldogs.

FSU got its in the opener from shortstop Kodi Ramirez along with outfielder Paige Kortz, catcher Ali Magiera and designated player Evelyn Blood.

In the circle, Bulldog freshman Aryn Gallacher tossed three innings of action and allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits. Kristie Gray tossed three innings of scoreless relief, giving up only two hits. SVSU's Emily Depew earned the shutout win and gave up only four hits with 10 strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, the Cardinals started strong with three runs in the first and they added three more in the fourth to take a 6-2 edge after FSU had cut the deficit back to a single run in the top of the fourth. Ferris State again trimmed the lead to 6-4 with two more in the fifth, but the Cardinals got one back in the bottom of the frame and held on from there, totaling 14 hits overall to eight for FSU.

Ferris State was led at the plate by Korts, who had two hits with two RBI's and a double. Left fielder Abby Mitchell also added two hits and knocked in a run with a triple while Ramirez doubled in the game and scored once. Blood along with first baseman Kaitlyn Orme and third baseman Amara Zukowski all totaled a hit.

The Bulldogs' three pitchers of Kaitlyn Nugent along with Gray and Kylie Masko combined to allow five earned runs on 14 hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Ferris State will return home to host Davenport in a GLIAC doubleheader on Tuesday (April 27) starting at 2:30 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Softball Field.
