Ashley Swanson and Bryce Hetchler Share Team Most Valuable Player Award

The Ferris State University women's golf team recently celebrated its many accomplishments for the 2009-10 season and also recognized three student-athletes for their efforts this season.

Sophomore Bryce Hetchler (Clinton Township/Fraser) and freshman Ashley Swanson (Flushing/Flint Powers Catholic Central) were selected as co-recipients of the Most Valuable Player Award.  The last time a pair of Bulldogs shared the award was in the 1999-00 season. 

Swanson also received the Bulldog Award, which recognizes a current team member who displays the most dedication and hard work.  The Most Improved Player Award was presented to sophomore Breezy Bernth (Greenville).

Hetchler, a two-time (2008-09 and 2009-10) All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Second-Team pick, finished third among Ferris State's 2009-10 leaders with an 81.65 stroke average (2,123 total strokes) in 26 rounds.  She registered four top-20 place performances this season with three of those being among the top 10.  In her two-year FSU career, Hetchler is presently averaging 81.15 strokes per round (4,301 total strokes) in 53 rounds of competition.

Swanson averaged a team-leading 81.08 strokes (1,946 total strokes) in 24 rounds and attained All-GLIAC Honorable Mention Team recognition this season.  She chalked up five top-20 place efforts in tournament play this campaign, which featured three top-10 place performances.  Swanson led Ferris State to a seventh-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Division II Super Regional One (May 2-4) with a squad-best 233 score (78-9-76=233) in the three-round tourney.

Bernth compiled a 90.28 stroke average (1,625 total strokes) in 18 rounds this season to go along with one top-20 place showing.  She has produced a 89.40 career stroke average (2,235 total strokes) in 25 rounds to date.      

Ferris State, under the direction of third-year head coach Mike Mignano, made its ninth consecutive NCAA-II Regional Tournament appearance this spring.
