Ferris State's Destiny Lawson Finishes With Impressive Showing At Prestigious Dixie Women's Amateur

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University women's golf junior standout Destiny Lawson (Ocala, Fla./West Port) returned to her home state of Florida over the holiday break and had an impressive showing in a high-profile event.

Lawson took part in the Dixie Women's Amateur at the Woodlands Golf and Country Club in Tamarac, Fla., and finished 17th overall at +1 for the four-rounds of action, which took place on both the club's east and west courses.

The amateur event annually draws the top juniors, college players and mid-amateurs from around the world.

In the opening round, Lawson fired an even-par 72 on the West Course before shooting a 77 in round two on the East Course. She came back to notch a one-under par 71 in the third round on the West Course.

Following the first 54 holes of action, the field was cut from 100 players down to 70 and ultimately Lawson shot a 69 in the final round at three-under par on the East Course.

Overall, Lawson shot a 289 for the four rounds of action for a +1 finish in the field of 100 golfers. She was only 14 shots behind champion Yujeong Son, who carded a 275 at -13 for the week.

The Dixie Amateur originated in 1924 at the old Miami Country Club and has traditionally attracted a strong field of amateur players. It has been played continuously since 1962 at various courses in South Florida with several former competitors graduating to the PGA Tour.

The event was moved to a December format in the 1990's, specifically to allow a greater number of collegiate golfers to participate and strengthen the field. The women's division was added in 2002 and has consistently attracted the finest female amateurs in the world.

Last year, Lawson qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships and placed 14th overall in the East Super Regional last May in Canton, Ohio.

Lawson and the Bulldog women's golf team are slated to open the 2018 spring season on March 8-9 at the GLIAC vs GMAC Showdown in Tampa, Fla.
