Ferris State Women's Golf Draws Nationwide Attention During Spring Competition In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team received nationwide attention in this week's trip to Florida over the annual FSU spring break.

The Bulldogs, who competed in the GLIAC vs GMAC Showdown this week in Tampa, had an opportunity to watch Tiger Woods compete at the Valspar Tournament and a photo of the squad was shared to more than 1.2 million followers by the PGA Tour on instagram.

During the trip, the Bulldogs competed at the prestigious Saddlebrook Resort from Thursday thru Saturday (March 8-10) in Wesley Chapel, Fla. The event featured both a stroke play competition along with a match play team format.

In the stroke play portion of the tournament, FSU's Baylee Thompson shot a tournament low tying score of 73 in the second and final round on Friday.

Overall, Ferris State shot a 692 total to finish fifth in the stroke play competition. FSU carded a 351 team score in round one before notching a 341 figure in the final round.

Thompson paced FSU by finishing ninth overall with a 159 total as she came back with the impressive 73 round after posting an 86 in round one. The Bulldogs' Katelin Randolph also finished in the top 20 as she placed tied for 20th at 176 on rounds of 87 and 89 over the two days.

FSU's Mari Suokko also shared 20th place at 176 on rounds of 86 and 90 over the 36 holes while Maddie Tran came in 27th with a 181 figure. She followed up her first round 92 score with an 89 in round two.

Ferris State's Izzy Flack shared 31st place at 184 on rounds of 97 and 87 while Shayna Schenider was one stroke back at 185, which was good for a share of 33rd overall. She posted a 93 and a 92 over the two rounds, respectively.

Finally, Margo Brown shot a 100 in the opening round but did not finish round two for the Bulldogs.

Following the stroke play event, FSU competed against Walsh and won four matches to three in match play. Thompson won 2 & 1 while Randolph won 1 up. Suokko was also a winner 4 & 2 while Tran and Schneider each halved their matches. Flack dropped her contest by one while Brown lost 2 & 1 against the Cavaliers.

Along with FSU's match against Walsh, Grand Valley State beat Tiffin by two holes (4.5 to 2.5) with Trevecca Nazarene topping Northern Michigan by one (3.5 to 2.5).

Ferris State will be back in action at the Saginaw Valley State Spring Invitational Sept. 17-18 in Georgetown, Ky.
