Ferris State's Destiny Lawson Wins 2019 Michigan Junior Invitational

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University women's golfer Destiny Lawson (Ocala, Fla.) captured the 2019 Michigan Junior Invitational this past weekend at Pine River Country Club in Alma, Mich.

Lawson carded an impressive round of 71 to finish one-under par for her first victory as a collegiate golfer. She totaled six birdies, seven pars and five bogeys on the par 72 course measuring 5,700 yards for the collegiate women's division.

"Winning this tournament was a huge turning point in my golf career," Lawson said. "After going thru nine months of rehabilitation and strength training, it feels great to be back competing at a high level."

Lawson is believed to have recorded the first under-par finish in the 30-plus year history of the event, which annually features some of the top collegiate golfers around the state.

In the tournament, Lawson shot a 34 on the front nine and a 37 on the back to finish six shots ahead of runner-up Keegan Miller from Saginaw Valley State.

One of Lawson's collegiate teammates, Ferris State's Shayna Schneider (Frankenmuth), plaed third in the field with a round of 79.

The Bulldogs are slated to open the fall women's golf campaign on Sept. 14-15 at the Saginaw Valley State Invitational.
