Ferris State Women's Golf Still In Contention To Advance After Two Rounds At NCAA East Regional

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team remains in contention to advance following two days of action at the 2023 NCAA Division II East Regional Championships as the Bulldogs are currently tied for seventh overall after Tuesday's (May 9) play in Springfield, Ill.

The Bulldogs carded a 309 team score on Tuesday in the second round, lowering their total by 10 strokes from round one, and are now at 628 or +52 thru 36 holes of competition at the Panther Creek Country Club.

Ferris State is presently tied with host Illinois-Springfield and both schools are nine strokes behind Missouri-St. Louis, which sits in sixth place overall with a 619 score (+43) following the second round. The top six teams after the final 18 holes will advance to the NCAA National Championships.

Bulldog freshman Lizzie Anderson fired a three-over par 75 on Tuesday and is tied with fellow freshman Kamryn Shannon for 29th place individually with 154 totals after 36 holes. Shannon shot a 78 in round two and was one of three Bulldogs to card the exact same score.

FSU junior Alayna Eldred also notched a 78 in round two and is tied for 45th individually with a 160 total while Abby Grevel sits tied for 57th with a 163 mark following her second-round 81 score. Finally, Dani Staskowski also shot a 78 on Tuesday and is 80th in the field.

Overall, Findlay holds the lead after the second round with a 578 (+2) score with Indianapolis second (+7) and Wayne State third (+20) in the event.

This year's berth marks the Bulldogs' second-straight trip to the NCAA Regional Championships. A year ago, the Bulldogs placed 11th at the East Regional Championships in their first team trip to the postseason since 2014 when FSU finished fourth overall in the regional championships. The Bulldogs previously made 13 consecutive NCAA appearances from 2002 to 2014.

A total of 15 teams are competing in the event from the East Region from a total of six different conferences in addition to six individual competitors from non-advancing schools.

All participants will compete through the 54 holes of competition with the top six teams from the East Region along with the top two individuals not on an advancing team moving on to the national championships set for May 16-20 at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Mo.

Overall, the Bulldogs have twice captured a regional championship in 2003-04 and 2006-07 while attaining runner-up honors four times (2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, 2008-09).

Ferris State reached the NCAA Tourney this year as the GLIAC's automatic qualifier after winning the league championship for the first time since 2007 in Augusta, Mich.

The final round of competition takes place on Wednesday (May 10) in Springfield.
