Bulldog Women's Golf Closes NCAA East Region Championships With Strong Finish

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's golf team made a strong push to advance on the final day and finished seventh overall at the 2023 NCAA Division II East Regional Championships as play concluded Wednesday (May 10) in Springfield, Ill.

The Bulldogs, who needed to finish in the top six to advance to the NCAA D2 National Championships, posted their best score of the three-round tournament, carding a 306 team score over the final 18 holes of action at the Panther Creek Country Club. FSU pulled within five strokes of sixth-place finisher Missouri-St. Louis, but the Tritons held on to the final qualifying spot at the close of the regional event.

Ferris State lowered its score in each of the three rounds of the regional championships, shooting a 319 team score on Monday in round one followed by a 309 Tuesday and a 306 on Wednesday, closing with a 934 (+70) team figure. Findlay claimed the team title with a 862 (-2) score followed by Indianapolis at 875 (+11) in the 15-team field.

Individually, FSU freshman Lizzie Anderson led the Bulldogs on the leaderboard in a share of 25th place overall. After shooting a 79 in round one, she closed with back-to-back 75's the final two days of competition for a 229 overall figure.

Behind Anderson was fellow freshman Kamryn Shannon in a share of 32nd place overall with a 232 mark. She notched a 76 in round one followed by identical 78 scores over the final two rounds.

FSU junior Alayna Eldred shared 48th place overall with a 239 score, carding a 79 in the final round after scores of 82 on Monday and 78 on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Abby Grevel placed tied for 59th in the field with a 245 score on rounds. She shot an 81 in Tuesday's middle round while posting identical scores of 82 to open and close the event on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.

Finally, Dani Staskowski rebounded from not officially registering a score on Monday, posting a 78 in round two followed by a two-over par 74 on Wednesday for the Bulldogs' best individual round of the tournament. She finished 80th with her two-round 152 total.

This year's berth marked the Bulldogs' second-straight trip to the NCAA Regional Championships. A year ago, the Bulldogs placed 11th at the East Regional Championships in their first team trip to the postseason since 2014 when FSU finished fourth overall in the regional championships. The Bulldogs previously made 13 consecutive NCAA appearances from 2002 to 2014.

Ferris State reached the NCAA Tourney this year as the GLIAC's automatic qualifier after winning the league championship for the first time since 2007 in Augusta, Mich.

All five members of the Bulldogs' NCAA Tournament lineup are eligible to return next season.
