Women's Tennis Battles Well At 2019 ITA Regional Championships Over Weekend

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis squad, which is off to a 2-0 start in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) this year, stepped away from dual action to take part in the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships over the weekend in Grand Rapids.

The individual-based event was hosted by Davenport University and included representatives from programs across the region in flighted competition.

"With this being an individual tournament, we went into the weekend focused on cleaning up things we've been working on in practice," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "I really feel like everyone improved this weekend, which was our number one goal to help prepare us for our next GLIAC match against Grand Valley State."

The Bulldogs' top doubles team of Isabela Paixao and Agata Klak won two matches in the main draw before falling to the nation's fourth-ranked doubles team in Division II tennis.

FSU's Brittany Lavenant also won her opening match in the main singles draw where FSU had four individuals competing.

In the singles "B" draw, the Bulldogs' Sam Stephenson won her first match and was also one of four Bulldog players in the field who took part. Morgan Waller suffered a first-round loss, but battled back to reach the final round in the consolation draw.

Meanwhile, Lavenant and Silvia Verebes reached the final day of the "B" doubles draw on the weekend.

The Bulldogs return to GLIAC action as they host Grand Valley State on Wednesday, Oct. 2, starting at 3 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.
