Ferris State Women's Tennis Picks Up Fifth Victory In Past Week

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis squad maintained its hold on first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings as the Bulldogs opened their weekend trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula with a 5-2 road win on Friday (April 16) morning at Lake Superior State in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

The nationally 21st-ranked Bulldogs moved to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in the GLIAC by taking the victory over LSSU, which dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in league action.

"Any win when playing at Lake Superior State is a great victory due to playing on the gym floor surface they have," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "It takes a lot of focus when playing in that facility so we're pleased with the result."

Ferris State used victories from the number two and three doubles teams to gain the initial point of the match. The third doubles flight was pivotal as the Bulldogs pulled out a 7-6 (5-0) triumph.

The Bulldogs then came back and managed to win four of the six singles positions, taking wins at the first, third, fourth and six flights. Ferris State's Patricia Martin Gomez garnered a three-set victory at four singles for the Bulldogs.

The victory was the 12th in a row for the Bulldogs this season and the fifth in the past week for FSU.

The Bulldogs will complete the weekend swing in the Upper Peninsula by visiting Michigan Tech on Saturday (April 17) for a 9 a.m. (ET) league tilt in Houghton. FSU then returns to play its league regular-season finale on Tuesday (April 20) at Saginaw Valley State with the GLIAC Tournament scheduled for April 23-25 in Midland.
