Ferris Sweeps St. Joseph's (Ind.) 3-0 In 2009 Season Opener

The 2009 Ferris State women's volleyball team opened the season with a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) of St. Joseph's (Ind.) this Thursday (Aug. 27) evening in non-conference match action at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. 

Ferris State, which stands at 1-0 overall for the 2009 campaign, has now prevailed in 18 of its last 20 season openers to date as a result of the triumph on its home court.  A season ago (Aug. 28), the Bulldogs best Aquinas, 3-0, in their 2008 season opener at Big Rapids.

The Bulldogs were led offensively by senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) and junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) with 13 kills apiece as the hosts registered a .165 attack percentage.  The pair concluded the match by posting a .333 hitting percentage apiece.

Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) distributed a match-best 35 assists in her collegiate debut and also chipped in with five digs.

Sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) paced the Bulldogs in digs with 15 and sophomore outside Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) contributed 12 as FSU and St. Joseph's both accumulated 50 digs each.  The Pumas' Lindsey House racked up a match-leading 21 digs and was one of two SJC players to achieve double figures in that statistical department.

For the match, Ferris State chalked up 39 kills to St. Joseph's 29 total.  The Bulldogs also finished the contest with nine service aces compared to the Pumas' five.  FSU controlled play up front as well with 4.5 total team blocks while SJC generated one team block.

With the season-opening triumph, Ferris improved to 31-6 all-time in such encounters and are now 13-1 in season openers under current head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

Ferris State returns to the court this Friday (Aug. 28) for the 2009 Ferris State Invitational as the Bulldogs host West Virginia State in an 11 a.m. (EDT) match before taking on Indianapolis later in the day at 5 p.m (EDT).  Both non-conference outings will be held at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
