Indianapolis Deals FSU First Loss Of Season

The Indianapolis Greyhounds dealt the Ferris State University women's volleyball team its first loss of the 2009 season, 3-0, this Friday (Aug. 28) afternoon in Ferris State Invitational match play at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

With the 25-19, 25-13, 27-25 loss, the Bulldogs are presently 2-1 overall while the Greyhounds improved their record to 2-0.  Ferris State currently sports a 1-1 mark following the opening day of the Ferris State Invitational, which will wrap up this Saturday (Aug. 29) with two more non-conference matchups for the Bulldogs.

Senior outside hitter Katie Edwards' (Cedar Springs) 11 kills paced the Bulldogs as she was the lone FSU player to notch double figures in that statistical category.  Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) tallied seven kills while senior middle hitter Sarah Lark (Alma) chalked up six kills.  Redshirt frosh setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) racked up 28 assists for Ferris State, which hit only .094 for the three-set match compared to Indianapolis' .262 attack percentage.

Sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) was the team leader in digs with 16 and sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) supplied 13 digs to go with a .429 hitting percentage on five kills in seven attempts for the contest. 

In the first set, Indianapolis outscored Ferris State by a 4-1 margin to win the opener after the Bulldogs were able to draw within three points (21-18) on a Greyhound attack error.

A 14-3 scoring run in the second set by Indianapolis concluded a productive stanza as the Greyhounds hit an impressive .444 for the set with 16 skills in 27 opportunities.  FSU had narrowed the gap to 11-10 but would get no closer as the Greyhounds ran past the Bulldogs down the stretch.

In the third and final set, Ferris State made a valiant comeback to force a 23-all tie after trailing by five points (23-18).  Sarah Lark's kill drew the Bulldogs into the tie (23-23) and a setting miscue by Indianapolis knotted the match at 25-apiece.  However, the Greyhounds would seal the win on a kill by Lyndsay Callahan followed by a FSU attack error.

The Bulldogs are back in action this Saturday (Aug. 29), entertaining 14th nationally-ranked California (Pa.) Vulcans in a 12 p.m. (EDT) tilt at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.  Following that contest, FSU wraps up the Ferris State Invitational with a 2:30 p.m. (EDT) match against Minnesota, Crookston.
