Volleyball Falls In Four to 14th-Ranked California (Pa.) at Ferris State Invitational

The Ferris State University women's volleyball team battled but couldn't break nationally 14th-ranked California (Pa.) as the Bulldogs dropped a 3-1 decision (25-16, 27-25, 22-25, 25-12) this Saturday (Aug. 29) afternoon in a Ferris State Invitational match held at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

The loss evened Ferris State's overall record to 2-2 as the Bulldogs suffered their second consecutive loss at the Ferris State Invite.

Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) led the way from an offensive standpoint with a squad-best 12 kills on 25 attempts for a .280 attack percentage.  Senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) also attained double figures in kills with 11 total for the Bulldogs, who recorded a .160 hitting percentage.  A pair of seniors, outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) and middle hitter Sarah Lark (Alma) contributed eight kills apiece.  Lark also hit at a noteworthy .533 efficiency clip with eight kills in 15 chances.

Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) totaled 37 assists for the match.  Sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) notched a team-leading 14 digs, sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) had 12, and junior libero Dana Ruttle (Reed City) garnered nine digs.

California (Pa.) finished with a .283 hitting percentage with 52 kills in 127 attempts.  Ferris State notched 45 kills in 125 hitting opportunities.

A highlight for Ferris State occurred in the third set as the Bulldogs were able to hang on for the win with a Goodson kill and a Vulcans' attack error propelling the hosts to the decision.

Ferris State concludes play in this weekend's tournament this Saturday (Aug. 29) afternoon with a non-conference matchup versus Minnesota, Crookston, which is coached by former Bulldog assistant coach Lee Anderson.  The contest is slated to start around 3 p.m. (EDT) at the Ewigleben Sports Arena on the FSU campus.
