FSU Volleyball Dispatches Upper Iowa 3-2 in St. Cloud State Tourney Opener

Five players recorded double digits in kills as the Ferris State University women's volleyball team opened play at the 2009 St. Cloud State Tournament by claiming a hard-fought 3-2 victory over previously undefeated Upper Iowa (17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 18-25, 19-17) this Friday (Sept. 4) morning in SCSU's Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Bulldogs, who improve to 4-2 overall this season with the non-league triumph, hit at a season-best .237 clip for the match while Upper Iowa (5-1 overall) produced a .242 attack percentage in the five-set contest.  Both teams combined for 23 total blocks in the match as Ferris State accounted for a season-leading 12.0 total rejections.

Five Bulldogs reached double-digit kills and one recorded a double-doubles in the encounter.  Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) had a strong match with a team-high 15 kills and six blocks, which featured five block assists.  Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) notched a double-doubles for Ferris State with 13 kills on .367 hitting to go with a squad-best 14 digs and three block assists.

Senior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) turned in 12 kills while while a pair of senior middle hitters, Sarah Lark (Alma) and Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) contributed 10 kills each.  Lark also compiled five total blocks for the match with four via block assists.

Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) dished out a match-high 53 assists to go with a season-best nine digs and also had four block assists.  Sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) collected 12 digs and junior libero Dana Ruttle (Reed City) garnered 10 digs.

In the deciding fifth set, Ferris State trailed most of the way until the Bulldogs knotted the score at 14-all on a service ace by Dana Ruttle.  The set, which featured six ties and two lead changes, would have three more ties before a Katie Edwards' kill snapped a 17-17 tie.  The Bulldogs' winning point would follow on a block by Kristy Gilchrist and Sarah Lark off a UIU attack attempt.

The tourney's opening match represented the first-ever series meeting between the two schools.

Ferris State will face nationally fifth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney later this afternoon in a 3:30 p.m. (CDT) matchup at the St. Cloud State Tournament.
