Ferris State Volleyball Downs Michigan Tech, 3-1

The Ferris State University women's volleyball team started out slow in its Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup against Michigan Tech this Friday (Sept. 18) evening, but rallied to post a 3-1 victory (16-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22) over the Huskies at the Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich.

The win marked the fifth time in the last six outings in which the Bulldogs have come out on the winning side.  Ferris State is now 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC this fall to date. 

Ferris State was paced by junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central), who registered a team-high 15 kills and hit for .321.  She also was tops among the Bulldogs with eight total blocks, which included a career match-high six block solos. 

Joining Goodson in double-digit kills were sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) and senior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs).  Huntey finished with 12 kills and produced a .308 hitting percentage while Edwards racked up 11 kills and hit at a .259 clip.  Senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay)  supplied nine kills while fellow senior middle hitter Sarah Lark (Alma) hammered seven kills in the match.

For Michigan Tech, Kristine Sexton and Veronica Armstrong each generated a squad-best nine kills.  Armstong also led the Huskies with 11 digs.

Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt), a redshirt freshman setter, distributed 48 assists to lead all players.  The leader for Ferris State on the defensive side was sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville), who dug out a match-high 17 balls.  Ashley Huntey totaled nine digs and Katie Edwards contributed six digs. 

Ferris State concluded the four-set match with a .221 attack percentage while Michigan Tech turned in a .184 hitting percentage.  The Bulldogs also enjoyed a 51-42 kills advantage and also took a 9.0-4.0 blocks victory.

With the win over the Huskies, Ferris State is now 49-13 in the all-time series with a 26-7 road/neutral site record. 

FSU continues its conference action on the road this Saturday (Sept. 19) versus the Northern Michigan Wildcats in Marquette, Mich.  The opening set is slated to start at 3 p.m. (EDT) inside NMU's Vandament Arena.
