Findlay Bests Ferris State In Five Sets

Despite a 20 kills performance from junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids), the Ferris State University women's volleyball team came out on the short end of a 3-2 decision to the Findlay Oilers in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at UF's Croy Gymnasium in Findlay, Ohio.

With the five-set loss (25-17, 19-25, 25-21, 28-30, 17-15), Ferris State drops to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in GLIAC match play. Host Findlay improves its overall mark to 5-11 and is now 2-6 in the conference.

Goodson led all players in the contest with her 20 kills and dominated at the net with five blocks, which featured three block solos. Goodson was joined in double-digit kills by senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay), who had 13 kills as Ferris State recorded a .167 attack percentage. Seniors Sarah Lark (Alma) and outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) compiled nine and eight kills, respectively. Lark, a middle hitter and team co-captain, finished the match by hitting at a .450 clip.

Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) distributed a match-leading 55 assists and also contributed on the defensive end with nine digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey's (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) 15 digs marked a match high and she was joined in double digits by sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville), who dug up 14 balls.

In the fifth and final set, the two teams went back and forth with the score tied 11 times. The Oilers committed a ball-handling error to tie the set for the final time at 15-all, but a kill by Megan Florence gave the hosts a one-point lead. On the ensuing serve, a pair of Findlay players blocked a Katie Edwards' attack to conclude the two-hour match.

Ferris State managed to register a 58-52 edge in kills while also holding the higher numbers in digs (61-52), assists (55-51), and hitting percentage (.167 to .135).

FSU will get right back onto the court this Saturday (Oct. 3) against the Hillsdale Chargers in a GLIAC tilt at Hillsdale, Mich. A 2 p.m. (EDT) start time is scheduled for the opening set at HC's Jesse Philips Arena.
