Ferris State Volleyball Wins Dramatic Five-Setter Versus Ashland

The Ferris State University women's volleyball team played in another highly-contested Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match this Saturday (Oct. 10) afternoon as the Bulldogs rallied from a two-set deficit to come away victorious by a 3-2 score in a five-set thriller (21-25, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 16-14) at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson's (Grand Rapids/Central) generated a match-leading 19 kills on .375 hitting and had a squad-best six total blocks (three block solos and assists apiece) for Ferris State, which recorded a .185 attack percentage for the contest.  Senior middle hitter Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) and sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) registered 15 kills each as the Bulldogs improve to 15-6 overall and 8-3 in the GLIAC's North Division with the win.  Ferris State has won 10 of its last 13 matches to date this season, which includes four of its last five and is midst a three-match winning streak. 

For Gilchrist, the 15 kills puts her over the 1,000 career mark as she becomes the 16th player in Ferris State history to reach the milestone.  To date, Gilchrist has compiled 1,010 career kills in 110 matches.

Setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt), a redshirt freshman, turned in a solid performance as evidenced by her 51 assists, seven digs, and five block assists.  Ashley Huntey and sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) each generated a team-high tying 11 digs versus Ashland, which concluded the match hitting for a .097 clip.  Tobiczyk also contributed on the offensive side with a match-high three service aces. 

Ashland, which was involved in a five-set conference outing at Grand Valley State the previous night (Oct. 9), came out and captured the first two sets as the Eagles looked to have the match in hand.  However, Ferris State regrouped and won the third set by hitting at a .419 pace to keep its hopes of a win alive.

The Bulldogs managed to send the match into a deciding fifth set by winning set four as the hosts were neither tied or trailed at any point of the stanza.  FSU led 20-12 at one point but was never threatened by the Eagles the remainder of the set.  Ferris recorded a .250 attack percentage while holding Ashland to only .050 in hitting efficiency.

The fifth set saw Ashland score the first two points, but the Bulldogs quickly overcame the deficit with a 10-5 scoring run to take a 10-6 lead on a Kristy Gilchrist kill.  The Eagles would proceed to gradually chip away at FSU's lead and managed to tie the set up at 14-apiece.  However, Ferris wasn't about to be denied as Arielle Goodson delivered a block solo on an AU attack and then hammered the game-winning point off a set by Ashley Huntey.

The next appearance for the Ferris State volleyball team will be Oct. 16-17 at the 2009 Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Volleyball Tournament to be held at the Aim High Complex in Lansing, Mich.  The Bulldogs will go up against teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) and seeding for the tournament will be conducted this Monday (Oct. 12).
