Ferris State Bests Missouri-St. Louis In A Barn Burner

Behind four players with double-figure kills, the Ferris State University women's volleyball team won its fourth straight match as the Bulldogs defeated Missouri-St. Louis by a 3-2 score (12-25, 27-25, 25-21, 21-25, 15-13) this Friday (Oct. 16) afternoon at the 2009 Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament in Lansing, Mich.

The Bulldogs, who are currently 2-0 in the tournament, improved their overall record to 17-6 this season.

Ferris State won the five-set non-conference match despite being outhit by the Tritons percentage wise .248 to .111.

Leading the way for Ferris State offensively were a pair of middle hitters, junior Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) and senior Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay).  The two registered a team-best 11 kills apiece while senior outside hitter Katie Edwards (Cedar Springs) and sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) recorded 10 kills each.  Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) had a squad-best 47 assists and also chipped in with seven digs.

Sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) not only garnered 10 digs, but also served up a match-leading six service aces.  Junior libero Dana Ruttle's (Reed City) 11 digs tied for match-high honors.  Ashley Huntey also supported the defensive cause with a nine-digs performance. 

At the net, Arielle Goodson turned in a six total blocks efforts which featured a match-high five blocks solos.  Senior middle hitter Sarah Lark (Alma) contributed four total blocks with two solos and assists apiece. 

The two teams split the opening two sets as the Bulldogs won a second set thriller to tie the match at 1-1.  The next two sets would be 25-21 scores with Ferris State prevailing in the third set and Missouri-St. Louis in the fourth.

In the deciding fifth set, the score remained close throughout as FSU's largest lead would be five points (13-8).  The Tritons were able to get within a point at 14-13 but an attack error sealed UMSL's fate.

The Bulldogs will wrap up the two-day 2009 Asics GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Tournament this Saturday (Oct. 17) against the nationally 13th-ranked Lewis Flyers in a 12:30 p.m. (EDT) contest at the Aim High Facility in Lansing, Mich.
