Ferris State Winning Streak Ends In 3-0 Setback To 13th-Ranked Lewis

The Ferris State University women's volleyball team had aspirations of going undefeated at the 2009 Asics Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)/Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Crossover Tournament, but 13th-ranked Lewis had other ideas as the Flyers handed the Bulldogs a 3-0 loss (25-18, 25-21, 31-29) this Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon at the Aim High Facility in Lansing, Mich.

The match featured a pair of winning streaks as both teams entered their final tourney contest experiencing recent success.  Ferris State had won its previous five outings in a row while Lewis brought a 15-match winning string into the non-conference matchup.

Junior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) led the Bulldog offense as she recorded a match-high tying 13 kills and generated a .440 hitting percentage.  Goodson, who was this week's GLIAC North Division Player of the Week, also recorded three total blocks with two being solos.

Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) dug up a team-leading 10 balls while redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) and sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) produced seven digs each.  Fordyce also compiled 28 assists as Ferris State hit for a .177 clip to Lewis' .244 attack percentage.

Ferris State managed to hold an advantage in two statistical categories as the Bulldogs held a 45-41 margin in digs and led 7.0 to 2.0 in total blocks.

The Bulldogs dug themselves a hole from the outset by losing the first two sets, but put forth an inspired effort in the third set which featured eight ties and four lead changes.  FSU trailed 24-22 but denied the Flyers match point on back-to-back Arielle Goodson kills to tie the set.  The teams would go back and forth until Lewis was able to snap the deadlock once and for all to register the win and improve their season mark to 21-3 overall.    

Ferris State, which is now 17-7 overall this season, resumes GLIAC match play next Friday, Oct. 23, versus archrival Grand Valley State.  Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m. (EDT) at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich.  The contest represents the first of three consecutive conference road matches for the Bulldogs.
