Ferris State Women's Volleyball Caps Regular Season On A Winning Note

The Ferris State University women's volleyball team closed out its 2009 regular season on a successful note as the Bulldogs recorded a 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 28-30, 25-17) decision over Northern Michigan this Saturday (Nov. 6) afternoon in its regular-season finale match at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

With the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win, Ferris State improves its overall record to 19-10 on the season and 10-6 in the GLIAC's North Division.  FSU, which has now won seven of its last 11 contests to date, will now prepare for this Wednesday's (Nov. 11) GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal-Round match against the GLIAC South Division Champion Hillsdale Chargers in Hillsdale, Mich.  Opening serve is slated for 7 p.m. (EST) at HC's Jesse Philips Arena.

Leading the way offensively for Ferris State were middle hitters Kristy Gilchrist (Macomb/Anchor Bay) and Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central).  Gilchrist hammered a match-leading 17 kills and hit for a .282 percentage while Goodson posted 14 on .206 hitting.  Senior middle hitter Sarah Lark (Alma) provided nine kills while producing a .500 attack percentage as the Bulldogs concluded the match hitting at .199 efficiency.  Redshirt freshman setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) paced the offense with 46 assists, which represented a match high.

Ferris State featured three individuals with double-digit digs totals, led by sophomore libero Lisa Tobiczyk's (Marysville) match-leading 16 digs.  Junior libero Whitney Rupp (West Bloomfield/Mercy) garnered 14 digs and sophomore outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) added 12 as the Bulldogs registered a 62-to-49 digs advantage.

Both teams were productive at the net as Ferris State recorded nine team blocks and Northern Michigan chalked up eight total.  Arielle Goodson generated five blocks (four block assists) and Sarah Lark chipped in with four block assists.

Ferris State prevailed in the first two sets (25-20 and 25-22) as the Bulldogs registered .355 and .162 hitting percentages, respectively.  The third set was a tight one as 15 ties and 11 lead changes occurred before the Wildcats won the set on a Cassie Osiecki's service ace followed by a Mandie Meyer kill.

In the fourth set, Ferris State turned in a .276 hitting percentage to Northern Michigan's .077.  FSU went on a 10-4 scoring run to claim a 19-10 lead and the Wildcats were only able to narrow the gap to six points (23-17) late in the set.  The Bulldogs tallied the winning points on senior outside hitter Amanda Kettlewell's (Marysville) kill and clinched the match following a service ace by Whitney Rupp.
