Women's Volleyball Falls At Hillsdale In Conference Tourney Semifinals

The Ferris State University women's volleyball team faced a tough challenge this Saturday (Nov. 13) evening as the Bulldogs took on the nationally ninth-ranked Hillsdale Chargers on their home court in 2010 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semfinal-Round action at HC's Jesse Philips Arena.

Although the 3-1 score (25-23, 25-17, 24-26, 25-17) was not in their favor, Ferris State has plenty to accomplishments to be proud of.   The Bulldogs, who drop to 18-10 overall on the season as a result of the setback, rode a seven-match winning streak into the conference tourney contest.

Ferris State's top two kills leaders this season, junior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) and senior middle hitter Arielle Goodson (Grand Rapids/Central) led the way with 14 and 11 kills, respectively.

The Bulldogs, who compiled a .026 attack percentage to Hillsdale's .200 hitting efficiency in the four-set contest, received a 37-assists and seven-digs performance from sophomore setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt).  Defensively, Ashley Huntey recorded 16 digs and junior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) accumulated 13 digs.

Arielle Goodson was a dominant presence at the net with three block solos and block assists apiece.  Senior middle hitter Danielle Hamilton (Galesburg/Galesburg-Augusta) contributed one block solo and five block assists while sophomore middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) supplied three block assists.

Ferris State, which was making its 13th consecutive GLIAC Tournament appearance, came up short in the opening two sets.  However, the Bulldogs managed to force a fourth set after coming out on top 26-24 in the third set.  Despite being outhit efficiency wise .103 to .029, FSU was able to post the winning points on back-to-back attack errors and snap a 24-all tie. 

In what marked the match's final set, Ferris State never lead but also didn't trail by more than five points midway through.  The Chargers were able to go on a 7-2 scoring run to end the set and come away victorious.   Hillsdale, which is now 27-1 overall, will host Grand Valley State in this Sunday's (Nov. 14) GLIAC Tournament Championship match.

Riding the proverbial "bubble" for NCAA Tournament qualification, the Crimson and Gold will now have to await their postseason fate which will be announced this Sunday (Nov. 14) evening via www.NCAA.com starting at 10 p.m. (ET).
