Ferris Sweeps Drury in 2011 Season Opener

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team continued to maintain its high level of success in season opening victories as the Bulldogs posted a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 28-26, 25-20) over Drury this Friday (Sept. 2) afternoon in the 2011 Ferris State Invitational at FSU's Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Ferris State's overall record remains perfect at 1-0 to begin the 2011 season. The Bulldogs have now won 20 of their last 22 season-opening matches to date including the most recent non-conference win.

Senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Standwood/Morley-Standwood) led the Bulldogs on the attacks with a match high 13 kills. Junior middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) hammered eight kills while  junior outside hitter Aly Brecht (Alma) tallied seven to contribute to the FSU total of forty kills.

Junior Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) directed the FSU offense with a match-leading 34 assists. Senior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville) led the match in digs with 14, nearly half of Ferris State's total dig count, 30.

For the match, Ferris State tallied 40 kills to Drury's 30 match total. The Bulldogs also finished the contest with six service aces compared to the Panther's four. FSU also maintained control of the game with three total team blocks, where DU could not generate a block.

With the season-opening triumph, Ferris State improved to 33-6 all-time in such encounters and are now 15-1 in season openers under current head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm.

The Bulldogs continue action in the Ferris State Invitational this Friday (Sept. 2) versus Wisconsin-Parkside with a 6 p.m. (EDT) start time at the Ewigleben Sports Arena.
