Volleyball Wins Final Match Of Crossover

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's volleyball team got back on track with a 3-1 non-league win over Missouri S&T to wrap up the 2011 Mizuno Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC)/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Crossover Tournament on Saturday (Oct. 15) in Aurora, Ill.

The nationally 11th-ranked Bulldogs, who fell to 13th-ranked Northern Kentucky in a thrilling 3-2 setback on Friday (Oct. 14) evening at the nation's largest collegiate volleyball tournament, responded to beat the Miners by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-16.

The Bulldogs received 15 kills apeice from both senior outside hitter Ashley Huntey (Stanwood/Morley-Stanwood) and junior middle hitter Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview).  Huntey added nine digs and hit .364 for the day.

Freshman middle hitter Courtney Rehm (Portage/Central) added 12 kills while junior setter Samantha Fordyce (DeWitt) totaled 50 assists and eight digs for FSU.  The Bulldogs also recieved 18 digs from senior libero Lisa Tobiczyk (Marysville).

Overall, FSU compiled 56 kills to 51 for Missouri S&T and the Bulldogs hit .299 for the day while limiting the opponent to a .203 showing.

Ferris State registered 58 digs, nine blocks and six service aces in comparison to the Miners' 56 digs, five blocks and four aces.  Missouri S&T also had eight service errors with FSU recording six.

Missouri S&T was paced by Erin Bekebrede's 15 kills.  Jackie Zellmer added 13 kills while Jocelyn DeMotte netted 15 digs and Jennifer Costello had 47 assists.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 17-2 overall and the Bulldogs have now won 12 of their last 13 outings.  Missouri S&T dropped to 16-7 on the year.

Ferris State was the GLIAC's top-seeded team heading into the crossover tournament while the Miners were seeded sixth in the GLVC side of the draw.

The Bulldogs return home and will host Michigan Tech next Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Ewigleben Sports Arena in Big Rapids at 2 p.m. (ET). FSU then takes on Northern Michigan at home on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. (ET).  The two matches are the final regular-season home contests for the Bulldogs.
