Bulldog Split Two Matches To Wrap Up Minnesota-Duluth Classic

Big Rapids, Mich. - The 19th-ranked Ferris State University women's volleyball squad concluded weekend action by winning three of four matches with a split on Saturday (Sept. 8) at the Minnesota-Duluth Classic in Duluth, Minn.

The Bulldogs lost their opening match of the day to nationally sixth-ranked tournament host Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday by a 3-0 score.  The hosts won the "Battle of the Bulldogs" by beating FSU 29-27, 25-18 and 25-17 on the day.

However, FSU bounced back to beat Erskine (S.C.) by a 3-0 margin in the nightcap to earn the split.  Ferris State took the first set 25-20 followed by wins of 25-15 and 26-24 to improve to 6-2 overall this season.

Sophomore hitter Courtney Rehm paced Ferris State with eight kills and 10 digs in the Minnesota-Duluth match.  Junior libero Brandie Merren added 11 digs with freshman outside hitter Megan Vander Meer contributing eight kills overall.  Senior setter Samantha Fordyce totaled 24 assists in the setback.

Minnesota-Duluth held a decisive 52-30 edge in total kills and hit .318 for the match compared to FSU's .213 showing.  They also had 50 digs to 37 for Ferris State.

FSU held a 9-7 advantage in total blocks, but UMD had seven service aces to only two for the Bulldogs.

In the win over Erskine, senior middle hitter Anne Sutton tallied a squad-best 18 kills with senior outside hitter Aly Brecht contributing 11 kills.  Merren had 17 digs while Fordyce added 40 assists to go with 10 digs.

Ferris State hit an impressive .376 versus the Flying Fleet and totaled 46 kills to go with 46 digs, nine service aces and three blocks.  Meanwhile, Erskine finished with 33 kills, 34 digs, five aces and three blocks as well.

The Bulldogs open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action on the road next weekend.  FSU visits Northwood on Friday, Sept. 14, for a 7 p.m. (ET) league tilt in Midland.  The Bulldogs then travel to Hillsdale on Saturday, Sept. 15, with match time set for 2 p.m. (ET) inside HC's Jesse Philips Arena.
