Ferris State's Anne Sutton Claims Academic All-America Laurels

Big Rapids, Mich. - For the second consecutive year, Ferris State University's Anne Sutton (Grand Rapids/Northview) has been chosen as an Academic All-American as she was named today (Dec. 12) to the 2012 Capital One Division II Academic All-America Second Team.
The academic all-america teams are chosen by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) members and recognize the nation's top student athletes for their combined performance on the floor and in the classroom.
The senior middle hitter earlier joined an elite group of student-athletes in the storied history of the Bulldog women's volleyball program as she earned her first American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America honor by garnering honorable mention recognition this season, which makes her both an All-American on the floor and an Academic All-American in the classroom for the 2012 campaign.
This year also marks the second-straight season in which Sutton has achieved Academic All-America status as she was a third-team honoree a year ago. A total of six student-athletes from across the country were named to one of the three Academic All-America teams (first, second, third) and Sutton was among two repeat honorees on the second team.
Sutton was previously named to the AVCA All-Midwest Region First Team and she also claimed Daktronics Division II All-Midwest Region First Team accolades as well this fall.
Sutton ranked among the nation's top 10 players this season with a .388 attack percentage and led the Bulldogs in kills (346) and blocks (88). She also earned both All-GLIAC First Team and Capital One Division II Academic All-District IV First Team honors for the second consecutive campaign and finished first in the league in attack percentage along with ranking among the leaders in both kills and blocks.
A four-time GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree, Sutton has twice earned D2 Athletic Directors Association Academic Achievement Award laurels. She wrapped up her Bulldog career with 861 kills, 227 blocks, 145 digs and 27 service aces in 97 career matches. In addition, she posted a school-record with a .360 career attack percentage in 333 total sets.
Ferris State turned in its 15th consecutive winning season this fall as the Bulldogs went 24-8 overall with a second place 16-2 record in the GLIAC's North Division. FSU also made its 15th-straight appearance in the GLIAC Tournament this campaign.
The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 17th time overall this season and it was the program's second-straight trip to the national tournament along with third in the last four seasons.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 16,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
